Welcome message

From the Deputy Commissioner, Large Business and International

Welcome to the first edition of the Large Business Bulletin for 2012.

This year, we are continuing to focus on working with you to provide greater certainty on your tax affairs. Large business is important to the Australian economy and to our whole tax system. Having a good relationship with you helps us to understand your business and continually improve how the system works for you.

In early March I attended the first Large Business Advisory Group meeting for the year. Forums like this help us continue to identify and action opportunities to improve how we engage with the large market and work collaboratively to respond to challenges and opportunities.

We are introducing a new income tax schedule for 2012: the International dealings schedule (IDS) 2012. It replaces the previous Schedule 25A and Thin capitalisation schedules.

The IDS 2012 schedule is aimed at allowing more targeted assistance, better support to taxpayers and helping reduce overall compliance costs. We refined the schedule through consultation with industry and our taxpayer forums.

Our tax exploitation schemes article discusses our areas of focus in relation to aggressive tax planning risks. We're committed to detecting non-compliance and working with taxpayers to ensure they fulfil their obligations.

We are continuing to implement our risk differentiation framework (RDF). Our RDF article provides you with an update on our progress and the outcomes of our initial meetings with taxpayers.

This edition also includes articles on the research and development tax concession, the reportable tax position schedule and reforming our transfer pricing rules.

I look forward to working with the large market to enhance our tax and superannuation systems in the year ahead.

Mark Konza
Deputy Commissioner
