    Computer requirements

We recommend you use e-tax on a computer running a recent version of Windows or Mac operating systems.

You'll need an internet connection to pre-fill your tax return and lodge it online.

    Verifying your identity

To lodge your e-tax return online, or use the pre-filling service, you need to verify your identity using either:

    • a notice of assessment we issued to you after 1 May 2008 and before 25 May 2013
    • your tax file number, issued before 25 May 2013, and a 'shared secret'.

    Downloading and installing e-tax

E-tax is a software program that you download and install on your computer. E-tax 2013 is available from 1 July 2013 until 31 May 2014 (but you must lodge your tax return by 31 October 2013).

    Using e-tax

E-tax automatically performs checks and calculations to help you complete your tax return correctly, and can pre-fill some of your information.

Members of your household can each use the same copy of the e-tax software to prepare and lodge their own tax returns.

For vision impaired users, most commercial versions of screen magnification software should work with the standard installation of e-tax for windows.

If you're in business as a sole trader or a partner in a partnership, you can use e-tax to prepare and lodge your individual tax return. However, you can't use e-tax to lodge a company, trust or partnership return. Tax agents can't use e-tax.

    Lodging your e-tax return

If you can verify your identity and have an internet connection, you can lodge your e-tax return online. If you can't lodge online, you can use e-tax to prepare and print a paper tax return to lodge by mail.
