Reporting a tax avoidance scheme

If you are offered a tax avoidance scheme, you should reject it and then report it to us.

By reporting tax avoidance schemes as early as possible, you can help us prevent people getting caught up in them and facing significant penalties.

Reporting a scheme

A tax scheme is an artificial or contrived arrangement designed to gain a tax benefit or defer tax obligations. For more information, refer to Aggressive Tax Planning.

You can report a tax scheme by:

  • calling our confidential Tax Planning Schemes hotline on 1800 177 006 between 8.30am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday
  • emailing us at reportataxscheme@ato.gov.au

If you need to report tax evasion, for example failing to declare cash payments as assessable income or scams involving people fraudulently claiming to be from the ATO:

  • Complete an online Tax Evasion report. When you submit the report you will be given a case reference number. Please keep this number and use it if you want to give us more information about this case in the future or send us supporting information.
  • Call 1800 060 062 (free call), 8.00am til 6.00pm weekdays (except public holidays).
  • Fax us on 1800 804 544 (free call). Please mark information 'In confidence'.
  • Write to us - mark all letters 'In confidence' - at:
