There are a number of options available if you want to cancel an entity’s registration for any of the following:
Australian business number (ABN)
goods and services tax (GST)
fuel tax credits (FTC)
luxury car tax (LCT)
wine equalisation tax (WET), or
pay as you go (PAYG) withholding.
Cancelling an ABN online via the Australian Business Register will also cancel any GST, LCT, WET, FTC and ATO digital certificate registrations.
To cancel one or more business accounts only (for example, GST, WET), but keep the ABN registration, you must use either the paper form Application to cancel registration (NAT 2955) or telephone 13 28 66 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. See 'How to cancel your registration' below.
You should ensure that all outstanding activity statements and PAYG withholding obligations are lodged and any liability is met before cancellation of an ABN.
the Business Portal (or Tax Agent Portal).
Registrations that can be cancelled via the portals are GST, FTC and PAYG withholding. Tax agents will need to ensure their tax agent number is recorded against the client’s record before they can cancel a client’s registration. An ABN cannot be cancelled via the portals.
To perform these actions online you will need to register for a free digital certificate via online services.
