How to register for an ABN

Below is information on how to apply for an Australian business number (ABN) and how to register as a withholder.

How do you apply for an ABN?

You can apply:

• online through the Australian Business Register at www.abr.gov.au
• through a tax agent, or
• on a paper application:
• ABN registration for individuals (sole traders) (NAT 2938)
• ABN registration for companies, partnerships, trusts and other organisations (NAT 2939)
• ABN registration for superannuation entities (NAT 2944).

Registering as a withholder If you withhold tax, you should phone the Australian Tax Office on 13 28 66 to register as a withholder. This is different to registering for an ABN. If you are withholding from employee wages you are already registered as a withholder.
