What information can I get?

Under excise law you can get information about excise licences, movement permissions and approvals to receive concessional spirits that relate to a person (including a company) provided you currently deal with them, or are proposing to deal with them in relation to excisable goods or goods under the control of the Tax Office.

You can request the following information:

  • whether a person holds a valid excise licence or a valid movement permission to move excisable goods or tobacco plant, seed or leaf
  • details of the licence or movement permission held by that person
  • details of any conditions that apply to the licence and/or movement permission, and/or
  • details of approvals to receive concessional spirit for approved purposes.

We may ask you to provide evidence of any dealings or proposed dealings with a person before we provide the information.

Who can request information?

You can request information if you are dealing, or intend to deal, with a person (including a company) and you:

  • wish to verify that they hold a valid excise licence to manufacture, store, produce or deal in excisable goods or tobacco seed, plant or leaf
  • intend to move excisable goods underbond or tobacco seed, plant or leaf to that person and you wish to verify that they hold a valid excise licence or movement permission, and/or
  • wish to verify that they hold a valid concessional spirits permit before delivering concessional spirits to them.

What can I do with the information?

Under privacy law, the information provided to you by the Tax Office may only be used for the purpose for which it is disclosed - that is, for ensuring that the dealing or proposed dealing is in accordance with excise law.

How do I request information?

You can request information from the Tax Office:

  • by phone, email, mail or fax
  • in person, for example during a field visit, or
  • through an authorised contact such as a tax agent.

You will need to provide the following details:

  • your name and the name of the business you represent
  • your Australian business number (ABN), tax file number (TFN) or excise identification number (EIN)
  • your postal address
  • the position you hold in the business
  • the name of the person (or entity) with whom you are dealing or are proposing to deal with
  • what the dealing or proposed dealing is, and
  • whether the dealing or proposed dealing is in relation to goods that are, or could be, covered by a relevant excise licence, movement permission or approval to receive concessional spirits.
