Entitlement to an ABN

The Australian business number (ABN) is a single identifier for all business dealings with us and other government departments and agencies. Not everyone is entitled to an ABN and applying for an ABN is not compulsory.

A contractor with an ABN has different GST and pay as you go (PAYG) withholding obligations than a contractor without an ABN.

The ABN entitlement tool has been designed to help individuals to determine whether they are entitled to register for an ABN.

To work out whether or not you are entitled to an ABN, use the ABN entitlement tool.

To find more information about ABNs, including how to apply, go to ABN essentials.

When applying for an ABN it is important that the information you provide is true and correct.

Making a false or misleading statement to the Australian Business Register (ABR) may result in a penalty.

For more information on the penalty see Penalties for false or misleading statements made to the Australian Business Register on the ABR website
