This month the SME community turned its focus to all-things fringe benefits tax (FBT) with discussions on exempt and in-house benefits, and a more general discussion around what goes 'wrong' and 'right' for members when managing their FBT obligations.
All of the discussions seemed to suggest that members have a good general understanding of FBT issues, and where they do have a problem they make use of a tax expert to help sort them. The broader discussion around FBT obligations had some members highlighting the rules around entertainment as sometimes being difficult to understand and apply.
All three discussions called for greater clarity and simplification around FBT with some acknowledging the ATO website as a positive resource for finding answers.
Supporting this run of discussion topics was a members-only webinar headed: FBT - meeting your annual obligations. Hosted by Glenn Smith an ATO expert on FBT, over 50 members logged into this webinar which included a detailed presentation on FBT issues as well as an extensive Q&A session afterwards.
The FBT webinar and discussions are currently available at the SME community for viewing by members.
A discussion on Auskey was also held this month and drew a variety of response. Some members described transitioning from ATO digital certificates to Auskey a relatively easy process while others found it more challenging.
