Careers in the Tax Office - auditors

In the Australian Taxation Office, auditors manage and complete audits on extremely sensitive and complex cases that are considered to be a high risk to the revenue.

Auditors may be required to:

  • use audit techniques involving direct and indirect income measurement and reconstruct financial records from financial institutions or other third party information
  • conduct audits in highly adversarial environments involving taxpayers and their representatives, and involving the prosecution of taxpayers and helping law enforcement agencies
  • brief Tax Office legal officers and legal counsel, and
  • represent the Tax Office at both professional and law enforcement forums, identifying risk, selecting cases and developing and implementing strategic policies and processes.

Experience required

  • 3-5 years experience in an audit environment in a large accounting firm or Internal Revenue Service.
  • Experience in complex audits on individuals or businesses.
  • Continuing professional education in auditing.
