The Tax Office has in place pay and work condition agreements with employees. The ATO (General Employees) Agreement 2009 is with APS Level 1 to Executive Level 1 employees. This agreement is a union collective agreement made under the Workplace Relations Act 1996. The ATO (Executive Level 2) Agreement 2009 is an employee collective agreement made under the Workplace Relations Act 1996.

The purpose of the agreements is to support the strategic direction of the Tax Office and to reward our people for performance and the achievement of corporate objectives. The pay and conditions set out in the agreements are a practical representation of the relationship between the Tax Office, employees and unions.

As part of the agency agreement process, all Tax Office people are invited to vote on the proposed agreements. Agreements are only implemented if a majority of eligible voters endorse the offer. Voting is not compulsory, however the high rate of voter turnout (approximately 75 per cent) demonstrates the value of the agreement process in enabling Tax Office people to have their say on the direction of our organisation.
