New form to transfer super between funds

A new form is available from the Tax Office to assist people who want to transfer superannuation from one fund to another.

The form is called the Request to transfer whole balance of superannuation benefits between funds - also known as the ‘portability’ form.

The form can only be used to transfer the whole balance of a super account, not just a part of it.

When requesting the transfer, you will need to provide proof of identity documents, such as a driver’s licence or passport. The form and identity documents need to be sent to the super fund you’re transferring to or the fund you’re transferring from.

Fund members should be aware that transferring benefits out of a fund may close that account - and you should check this with the fund you are transferring benefits from.

To get a copy of the new portability form:

  • visit www.ato.gov.au and search for the new form by using its identifying publishing code: NAT 71223
  • phone the Tax Office Publications Ordering service on 1300 720 092. To order from an operator, call between 8am to 6pm weekdays only. Or use the automated self-help publications ordering service, also available on this number, at any time. Again, ask for the form by its Tax Office code: NAT 71223.
