Increased duty on tobacco

On 29 April 2010 the Australian Government announced that it would increase the excise tariff rate on tobacco products by 25%. Excise Tariff Amendment (Tobacco) Bill 2010 was introduced to the House of Representatives on 12 May 2010.

The new rates were published in the Government Notices Gazette on 29 April 2010 and came into effect from midnight 29 April 2010.

Legislation and supporting material

Legislation to bring this measure into effect is contained in the Excise Tariff Amendment (Tobacco) Act 2010 (76 of 2010) and Explanatory Memorandum which was introduced into the parliament on 15 June 2010 and received Royal Assent on 28 June 2010.
