Many SME Tax Forum members have told us that payroll tax is a major challenge for them. Based on this feedback, we recently hosted a live chat on the issue with David Ramsbottom from the NSW Office of State Revenue.
David is a technical educator involved in providing technical information for tax practitioners and businesses subject to state taxation. While experiences of payroll tax can vary from state to state, he was still able to give a broad overview of the workings of this tax and how business might best deal with it.
Equally compelling was a live chat on non-compliance issues with Michael Cranston, ATO Deputy Commissioner, Serious Non-Compliance. Participants at this chat heard first-hand about our current priorities when it comes to dealing with businesses that are not willing to meet their tax obligations.
We understand that end of financial year (EOFY) is always a busy time for small to medium enterprises (SMEs). So to gain a better understanding of the challenges facing business we ran a discussion where members could explain how they met their obligations. Planning, good record keeping and starting early are some of the member's tips for reducing the EOFY pain.
The forum has recently had a burst of new recruitment. Due to this, and the EOFY challenges, it has been a good time to host a series of discussions broadly themed the 'costs of compliance'. Run over a number of weeks, this has proved a popular topic with many members sharing their views.
