Clean energy initiative - overview

The government has introduced a comprehensive plan to move to a clean energy future. This includes:

• introducing a carbon price
• promoting innovation and investment in renewable energy
• encouraging energy efficiency
• creating opportunities in the land sector to cut pollution.

The Clean Energy Regulator is the government body responsible for administering legislation that will reduce carbon emissions and increase the use of clean energy.

The Clean Energy Regulator is part of the Climate Change Portfolio. It is the government body responsible for administering the:

• Carbon Pricing Mechanism (CPM)
• National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme
• Carbon Farming Initiative
• Renewable Energy Target.

We do not administer the CPM. We are responsible for the administration of the tax implications of the government's clean energy future initiative, including the:

• clean energy changes to fuel tax credits and excise duty
• household assistance package tax reforms
• conservation tillage refundable tax offset
• income tax and goods and services tax implications of the clean energy measures
• small business concessions: changes to simpler depreciation rules.
