What is a small superannuation account?

A small superannuation account is an individual account balance in a superannuation fund or retirement savings account (RSA) which is less than $1,000 and contains some superannuation contributions made in order to meet an employer's superannuation guarantee or award obligations. Many people now have superannuation for the first time, especially part-time, casual and seasonal workers. Naturally, these balances start out as small accounts.
