Record Keeping Evaluation Tool

Introduction

You should use this tool if you are:

• thinking about starting a business
• in business and responsible for keeping the business records, or
• responsible for managing business records of small businesses, such as tax agents and bookkeepers.

This tool should not be used by superannuation funds, non-profit organisations or government agencies, as they have particular record-keeping requirements.

Step 1: Find out what records your business should keep

Answer questions about your business.	A list of records your business should keep. This list is based on the information you provide and is tailored to your business.

Step 2: Evaluate how well your business is keeping records

(Completion time - approximately 10 minutes)

Answer questions about the records your business keeps.	A report which indicates how well your business is keeping its records. If appropriate, this will include suggestions for improvement.

If you are thinking about starting a business, you will only need to complete step 1. If you are already in business, you should complete both steps.
