Overview

Use this worksheet to help calculate your fuel tax credits and claim them on your business activity statement (BAS). You must be registered for goods and services tax and fuel tax credits before you can claim.

How to work out your fuel tax credits

There are three steps to calculating your fuel tax credits:

Step 1 - Work out how many eligible litres of fuel you have used for each business activity

The most common way of doing this is to use either the:

  • basic constructive method by adding up all the eligible litres of each fuel type, or
  • basic deductive method by subtracting any ineligible fuel, such as fuel you used in small vehicles on a public road, from your total fuel.

Step 2 - Check which fuel tax credit rate applies to each of your activities

To do this, use the table provided.

Step 3 - Work out the amount of your fuel tax credits in dollars

To do this, multiply the number of eligible litres by the relevant fuel tax credit rate (step 1 x step 2).

You can also work out your fuel tax credits using the following methods:

  • the percentage use method, or
  • the estimated use method.

For more information, refer to Keeping records and calculating eligible litres (NAT 15230).

If you’re happy to use the methods in step 1, you can use the worksheet provided below to calculate your entitlements for the tax period.
