Strong tax system helps Australia weather tough financial times

The latest edition of the Australian Taxation Office's (ATO) electronic magazine, Targeting tax crime: a whole of government approach is out now.

This edition looks at the importance of a healthy tax administration system during times of economic turmoil. It features articles from guest writers Ross Greenwood and the Honourable Ray Finkelstein QC, as well as insights into tax crime and the ATO's law enforcement role.

The magazine's update on Project Wickenby builds on Tax Commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo's landmark speech to the Tax Institute of Australia on 15 March, where he highlighted the success of Project Wickenby in helping to tackle serious tax crime and stopping the flow of money to secret tax havens around the globe.

Finance and business commentator Ross Greenwood talks about the ongoing hearts and minds campaign the ATO must maintain to foster community confidence in an ever-changing, technology enabled environment.

Prominent retired federal court judge, the Honourable Ray Finkelstein QC shares his views on the differences between sentencing of 'white collar' crime and 'true' crime, and his recommendations for bridging the gap of public perceptions.

Other stories explore some of the challenges Australian government agencies face in the fight against tax and superannuation crime and how they work together to stop it.
