Media Release - Nat 99/50

Tax Commissioner Michael Carmody today launched the Tax Reform Planner to assist businesses and their advisors to make the transition to The New Tax System.

"The Tax Reform Planner tells you what tax reform means for your business. It builds a picture of what, in practice, you need to do, month by month," Mr Carmody said

"Importantly, the Tax Reform Planner details how the Tax Office will help you at each stage.

"I encourage businesses and advisors to use the Tax Reform Planner and to provide feedback to the Tax Office. We are particularly interested in suggestions about any additional practical support we can provide.

"The Tax Office has comprehensive programs in place to assist businesses to plan for the implementation of tax reform. For example, our GST field officers will visit around 250,000 small businesses ahead of 1 July 2000 to provide them with help and information, and we will hold more than 900 GST seminars throughout Australia.

"We have recognised the different requirements of business and advisors by providing in the Tax Reform Planner tailored information for each group.

"We look forward to working with professional and industry groups to expand the practical advice and tips in the planner.

"Our current programs are detailed in the Tax Reform Planner and information on our ongoing support will added in the coming months. Making the planner available on the Internet will help to fill out the picture for everyone," Mr Carmody said.

The Tax Reform Planner is available on the tax reform Internet site at www.taxreform.ato.gov.au.
