Media release 2009/60

The Tax Office today reminded people who prepare their own tax return that there’s just one week left to lodge.

As the usual deadline of 31 October falls on a weekend, taxpayers have until Monday 2 November to lodge their returns.

Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo advised people not to wait until the last minute.

“The easiest way to lodge on time is using e-tax, which can save you time by downloading details like payment summaries, Medicare information, government payments and bank interest directly into your return,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.

“Nearly two million people have already lodged using e-tax, and over 1.2 million have downloaded information into their returns.”

Anyone concerned they won’t meet the deadline should contact the Tax Office on 13 28 61 before 2 November.

If you are using a tax agent for the first time or a different tax agent to last year you need to contact them before the deadline.

“Only registered tax agents are allowed to charge a fee to prepare your income tax return,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.

To check if your tax agent is registered go to the Tax Agents Board website at www.tabd.gov.au or call 1300 362 829.

Remember to carefully check the information in your tax return before lodging to ensure you’ve included all income, claimed any deductions and rebates you may be entitled to and recorded your personal information correctly.

E-tax can be downloaded free of charge 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the Tax Office website.
