Media release 2007/33

Volunteers trained by the Tax Office are now available in your area to help low income earners prepare their tax returns.

Assistant Commissioner Chris Mobbs said Tax Help is a free and confidential service provided by a network of Tax Office-trained community volunteers.

“In particular, the service aims to assist people on low incomes with straightforward tax matters or those preparing a tax return for the first time,” Mr Mobbs said.

“This includes giving advice on whether you need to lodge a tax return, assisting with baby bonus applications or claims for family tax benefit, and helping those eligible to claim franking credits who do not have to lodge a return.”

Tax Help has helped more than 650,000 people over the past 19 years, including people from non-English speaking or Indigenous backgrounds, those with disabilities and young people lodging a tax return for the first time.

Tax Help is available by appointment at convenient community-based locations in most areas, such as libraries and community centres, until the end of October.

To find out if you are eligible or for the contact details of your nearest Tax Help centre, phone 13 28 61.
