What is the Cultural Gifts Program?

The Cultural Gifts Program (the program) encourages gifts of culturally significant items to public art galleries, museums and libraries by offering you a tax deduction for the market value of your gifts. Property you donate under the program is exempt from capital gains tax and the tax deduction may be spread over a period of up to five years.

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C), Office for the Arts (OFTA) administers the program with advice from the Committee on Taxation Incentives for the Arts. The committee advises the Secretary of PM&C on the approval of valuers to participate in the program and examines donations to make sure they meet the program's requirements.

You can donate property in any form (other than an estate or interest in land or in a building or part of a building) including:

  • Indigenous arts
  • cultural artefacts
  • natural and scientific materials
  • film and social history pieces
  • paintings
  • manuscripts
  • books
  • antiques
  • jewellery.
