Audit statistical sampling guidelines

Overview

These guidelines have been developed in consultation with the Taxation Institute of Australia, the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Australian Bankers Association and the Corporate Tax Association of Australia. They will apply from the date of issue.

Amendments may be made in the light of practice and developments in the law, but in any event, the guidelines will be reviewed no later than twelve months after the date of issue.

In circumstances where the Tax Office considers it appropriate to use statistical sampling in the audit of a taxpayer's affairs, these guidelines set out the principles and parameters which will normally be used.

For large and complex case audits these guidelines should be read in conjunction with, and as an expansion of, the 'Guidelines for the Conduct of Large and Complex Audits' as amended (Code of Conduct), which became operative from 1 February 1991.
