Do I have to give my name if I make a report?
No. You do not have to provide your name when giving us information, and we will not ask you to provide it.
You only need to provide contact details if you want to be contacted by an investigating officer. In this case, we will only contact you if we think we need further information.
Yes, it is the ATO's policy that the information you provide and your identity will be kept confidential.
Is your information secure?
This is a secure form that uses encryption technology - this ensures your information cannot be read until it reaches us.
If the computer you are using is shared or part of a network, it may be possible for someone else to view your internet history. Unless you are confident that the person you are providing tax evasion information about will not be able to see your information, consider using a different computer or contact us by phone.
How much information is needed to make a report?
You need to give us as much information as you can, as we will be unable to contact you again for more details (if you have chosen not to provide contact details, as explained above).
If you make a report online, you can provide a maximum of 200 words per question.
If you need to provide more information, you can contact us by phone or write to us and quote the reference number.
We assess every report of suspected tax evasion. This can include monitoring the person's compliance, requesting further information from third parties, or seeking information directly from them through phone calls, letters or visits.
It may not be appropriate to act on your information immediately - a business may still need to lodge their business activity statement (BAS) or income tax return before your information can be used.
Community information is an important source of intelligence for the ATO because it often acts as an early warning of non-compliant activities.
Why do you need my information?
We need your information because people in the community are often in a good position to provide information about things that we might not know about.
You should tell us because tax evasion is a serious threat to strong tax and superannuation systems that help sustain a strong community.
People that unfairly hide income and avoid tax cheat the community and disadvantage Australians who do the right thing.
By telling us about potential tax evasion, you are making it fairer for everyone.
No. The Privacy Act and taxation legislation prevents us from telling you about our investigations of specific taxpayers.
Is there a reward for providing information?
No. We cannot pay monetary rewards - however, your information helps to make sure everyone pays their fair share of tax.
What if I'm involved in tax evasion? Can I get immunity if I report?
No. We cannot grant you immunity from prosecution.
However, if you decide to make a voluntary disclosure about your own evasion, then penalties imposed on you may be limited.
What should I use the online form for?
You should only use this form to report suspected tax evasion.
Do not use it to report illegal financial transactions not related to tax. Read How to identify tax evasion to find out how to report matters that are not tax evasion but concern Centrelink, Child Support Agency, police, immigration and other agencies.
You can only complete this form in English. If you want to use another language, phone or write to us.
How does the form work?
There are four screens to complete. Give as much information as you can and use the 'next' and 'back' buttons to move between pages.
The four screens cannot be saved.
If you click the 'Cancel' button before clicking on 'Submit report' at the end of the last screen, your information will be lost.
After you submit this form, we will give you a case reference number for you to quote if you want to give us more information later or you wish to send us supporting information by fax or mail.
How long will take?
In simple cases, it will take you about 15 minutes to complete this form, depending on the amount of information you provide. If you don't have enough time at the moment, come back later or contact us by phone.
Privacy
You don't have to provide personal information to us - however, if you choose to give us your personal information, we can contact you again if necessary to clarify or ask for any new information.
The personal information you provide to us is treated as confidential.
