2.1 Introduction

The ATO is the main administrator of Australia's revenue system and significant aspects of the superannuation system. We also deliver a range of services and benefit payments to individuals, businesses, government and agencies.

Our outcome and outputs framework sets out our commitments to government.

Our outcome

We are responsible for delivering:

Effectively managed and shaped systems that support and fund services for Australians and give effect to social and economic policy through the tax, superannuation, excise and other related systems.

At the outcome level, we have four effectiveness indicators (see part 2.2).

Our outputs

Our outputs seek to deliver our outcome by:

• shaping, designing and building administrative systems that support and deliver community and government expectations of the tax and superannuation systems (see part 2.4)
• managing tax collections, transfers and payments (see part 2.5)
• assuring compliance and support for tax collections (see part 2.6)
• assuring compliance and support for transfers and regulation of superannuation funds (see part 2.7)
• delivering services to government and agencies (see part 2.8).

Each year, details of the framework are outlined in the Portfolio Budget Statements, along with the relevant performance information. We monitor and evaluate our performance regularly through our governance processes.

We also report on four enabling outputs which relate to our internal activities that allow us to meet government and community expectations. These enabling capabilities are discussed in part 3.
