A bigger picture

The Australian Government and its agencies exist to improve the wellbeing of all Australians. The ATO plays its part by administering legislative regimes that are at the core of achieving the government's mission.

Revenue from Australia's tax system funds public goods and services that give effect to economic and social policies. Australia's superannuation system helps to secure retirement income for Australians.

The Australian business register provides the key to promoting online dealings between governments at all levels and businesses, helping to reduce compliance costs and making Australia more efficient.

The ATO has been entrusted by the community with the care and administration of these laws. The laws themselves are the outcome of democratic and political processes; the role of the ATO being to administer them fairly and in accordance with their terms.

Importantly, the way the ATO carries out its responsibilities influences both the relationship that people have with the state, and community cultural norms about integrity and the rule of law.

The ATO's corporate values underpin the way we operate and provide a framework for our strategies and decision making. By giving life to these in all our touch points with the community we stand the best chance of positively influencing community attitudes and behaviours.
