Setting the strategic direction

The ATO improves the wellbeing of all Australians by undertaking important responsibilities for the care of Australia's tax and superannuation systems and the Australian Business Register.

Revenue from Australia's tax system helps fund public goods and services that give effect to economic and social policies. Australia's superannuation system helps secure retirement income for Australians.

In undertaking these responsibilities we seek to achieve community confidence in the administration of Australia's tax and superannuation systems.

Our Strategic statement 2010-15 outlines the strategic direction, including a vision that Australians value their tax and superannuation systems as community assets, where willing participation is recognised as good citizenship. It is an aspirational statement describing our values and how we will work with government and the community in the years ahead.

In following the strategic direction, we deliver government priorities and work with the community to:

  • encourage people to support and understand the benefits of participation so that they are engaged and willing to participate
  • support people so that they are helped and assisted to understand their obligations and are able to comply easily at minimal cost
  • protect citizens, ensuring they are not disadvantaged, by deterring, detecting and dealing with those who have not complied
  • enhance and improve our capabilities to be more innovative, agile and responsive to challenges and opportunities
  • champion the interests of both individual taxpayers and the community, in our advice to government, as well as opportunities to make Australia more efficient.

Our corporate values guide this work by advocating a fair and professional approach by:

  • applying the rule of law so as to respect rights and provide certainty
  • supporting people who want to do the right thing and being fair but firm with those who don't
  • being consultative, reduce compliance costs and willing to co design to make things easier and fairer
  • being open and accountable to gain trust and confidence
  • being responsive to challenges and opportunities to better serve the community.
