About ECI - Use of
PKI by government agencies
In May 1998 the federal government released the Gatekeeper strategy. This strategy,
compiled by the Office of Government Information Technology (now known as the National
Office for the Information Economy - NOIE), detailed a framework and guidelines for the
implementation and use of PKI technology by federal government agencies within Australia.
All federal government agencies implementing PKI must conform to the requirements of
the Gatekeeper strategy. Any Certification Authority (CA) established by a government
agency (or by private enterprise where they intend to offer CA services to federal
government agencies) must acquire accreditation in accordance with the government's
Gatekeeper framework.
