Info for tax agents
Australian Business Register (ABR)
As a tax agent you can access your clients' ABN information to do two things online
- change "secure" ABN information such as postal address and public officer, and
see the change confirmed immediately in the same Internet session, and
- apply for a Tax File Number, PAYG or GST registration online and receive it by mail
shortly afterwards, as currently happens when you use ELS.
How to register for ABR
You will need to register for security access to the ABR by completing a one step form
entitled
Tax Agent Registration for security access to the Australian Business
Register (ABR).
- Go to the link above and print the form
- Complete the details, ensuring that you list all of the Tax Agent Registration Numbers
that relate to your business.
- Forward the completed form to the address or fax number printed on it.
- Refer to Step-by-step guide from step 3 onwards
for details of what to do once you have registered.
If you already have Keys and Certificates
If you already use ECI (Electronic Commerce Interface)-related ATO products, you will
already have Keys and Certificates that allow access to the ABR. However, you must still
ensure that you are the authorised representative for your clients for the ABR by:
- providing a list of your relevant Tax Agent Number(s) and your ABN by e-mail to pki@ato.gov.au
and
- ensuring that your tax agent number is recorded on each client record that you are
likely to access by lodging a CB ELS form.
If you have further questions, please contact the Electronic Products Infoline on
