Register for fuel tax credits using the phone

Phone registration uses a speech recognition service. You will hear automated questions - simply answer each question by saying your response.

There are six questions to answer. Generally, it only takes only a couple of minutes to register.

When you register by phone, listen to each question carefully. When you answer the question speak naturally, as in normal conversation - there is no need to slow down.

This service is available 24 hours a day seven days a week. To avoid busy periods phone before midday, after 5:00pm or on weekends.

To register you will need to have ready, your:

  • Australian business number (ABN)
  • business tax file number (TFN), and
  • the start date for fuel tax credits (see below for more information).

If you are a tax agent, you will also need to have your tax agent number (TAN) ready.

When you are asked

Response

Is the date you become eligible for fuel tax credits the first of July 2008? Please say yes or no.

Please note: You may be eligible to claim prior to this date. Please call 13 28 66 to find out more about your entitlements prior to the date of registering.

If 'yes', the start date defaults to July 1 2008 as requested.

If 'no', you will hear this statement, 'Your fuel tax credit registration will be effective from today's date.'

Do you expect to use diesel or petrol in a road vehicle?

Please say 'yes', 'no' or 'don't know' if you are unsure

Is this road vehicle greater than 4.5 tonnes?

Please say 'yes', 'no' or 'don't know' if you are unsure

For your registration to be complete, you must agree to the terms of the declaration

'I declare that I am authorised to make this fuel tax credit registration on behalf of the entity whose ABN was provided, and that the information given is accurate and complete.'

You will be asked 'Do you agree to the terms of the declaration?' Please say 'yes' or 'no'.

If yes - you will hear this statement, 'Please wait a moment while I retrieve your reference number.'

If no - you will hear this statement, 'You have decided not to lodge this registration. Thank you for using the fuel tax credits registration service. Goodbye.'

Successful fuel tax credits registration

You will be advised that you have lodged your registration successfully. A letter confirming your details and an information pack will be sent to you within 10 working days.
