We offer you a range of convenient payment options, both in Australia and overseas.

BPAY®
Make a payment directly from your cheque or savings account to us using your financial institution's telephone or internet banking service.

Credit card
Make a payment by credit card - conditions apply.

Direct credit
Transfer your payment to us online from your cheque or savings account.

Direct debit
Have your payment automatically deducted from your cheque or savings account.

Mail
Mail your payment slip with a cheque or money order to us.

Australia Post
Pay by cash (up to $3,000), cheque or EFTPOS at your post office (subject to daily limits). Your payment slip must be presented with your payment.

Paying from overseas
Make a payment by BPAY®, credit card, direct credit or by mail.

Terms and conditions when making a credit card payment to the ATO

Requirements

To make a credit card payment, you will need:

  • a current Visa, MasterCard or American Express card, and
  • your ATO electronic funds transfer code, or your payment reference number EFT code or PRN, and
  • use the Government EasyPay website or telephone service.

Card payment fee

A card payment fee applies to transactions made using this service. This fee is not subject to goods and services tax (GST) and is equal to the fee the ATO incurs from its banker.

The fee is a percentage of the tax amount being paid, based on the type of card used:

You will be informed of the fee amount and transaction totals before you are asked to confirm your payment.

Card payment fee deductibility

You may be eligible to claim a deduction for card payment fees - for more information, refer to the credit card payment fee deductibility guidelines.

Payment values

Tax payments between $10 and $50,000 will be accepted.

Government EasyPay - processing times

Your payment needs to reach us on or before its due date. Transactions entered on a weekend, national public holiday or after 6pm Sydney time will be processed on the next business day.

Transaction receipt

The Government EasyPay service will provide a receipt for both the tax payment and the card payment fee. The details will be displayed as ATO payment and Card payment fee - ATO on the cardholder's statement.

Direct debit

To establish a direct debit payment

A direct debit request can be organised over the phone by calling 13 11 42.

Only clients calling in person are authorised to give verbal authority for their account. Tax agents or other authorised representatives cannot give verbal authority on behalf of their client, partner or spouse - however, they can request a Direct debit request form for the client to complete and return to us.

Allow at least seven (7) working days for your direct debit to be activated to ensure your payment reaches us on or before its due date.

Mail your cheque or money order to us

Cheques and money orders should be for amounts in Australian dollars and payable to 'Deputy Commissioner of Taxation'. Cheques should be crossed 'Not Negotiable' and must not be post dated.

You should also include your payment slip or a note that states your:

  • full name
  • address and telephone number
  • account identifier - for example, tax file number (TFN), Australian business number (ABN) or client identification number
  • payment type - for example, business activity statement (BAS) payment, income tax or HELP.

To order a book of payment slips:

  • phone 13 72 26 for activity statement payment slips. You will need your Australian business number (ABN) to use this automated service
  • phone 13 28 65 for personal income tax, Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) or Student Financial Supplement Scheme (SFSS) payment slips. You will need your tax file number (TFN) to use this automated service.

Make a payment by cash, EFTPOS or cheque

If you have a pre-printed payment slip with a barcode, you can pay in person at any Australia Post outlet.

A $3,000 limit applies to cash payments. EFTPOS payments are subject to daily withdrawal limits.

Direct credit through SWIFT

You can transfer your payment to us through SWIFT. Contact your overseas financial institution for advice on how to make your payment.

The payment must be sent in Australian dollars.

Bank handling and exchange fees are generally automatically deducted from the exchanged value of the payment, at both the overseas bank and their companion bank in Australia, before being forwarded to us. You should make allowance for these fees when arranging your payment.

Mail

Mail a bank draft to us in Australian currency.

You should also include your payment slip or a note that states your:

EFT code or payment reference number (PRN)

What is my electronic funds transfer code or payment reference number?

Your electronic funds transfer (EFT) code or PRN is the reference number - it is printed directly above the barcode on your payment slip.

If you pay using BPAY® credit card or direct credit, you will need this number.

If you do not have your EFT code or PRN, go to EFT code or payment reference number (PRN) tool.

Receipts

The ATO does not automatically issue receipts, but they can be issued on request.

Your request will need to include:

  • the date of payment
  • the amount paid
  • the EFT code or PRN that appears on your ATO statement.
