The major changes in e-tax 2009 are a result of legislative changes and the additional enhancements to the e-tax pre-filling service. Changes have also been made to the verification process where you verify your identity in order to lodge the tax return or baby bonus claim online.

Changes and enhancements to the e-tax software

What is new for pre-filling in 2009?

Changes to pre-filling in 2009 include:

  • an enhanced Alerts service. This year, in addition to notifying you when additional information is available, if you register to receive your alert by email, you will also be advised of the type of data
  • private health insurance rebate details
  • rental property address details from 2007-08 rental property schedules
  • pay as you go (PAYG) income tax instalment amounts
  • reminders of letters that we have sent to you throughout the year in relation to:
    • your work related expenses, and
    • the need to lodge a schedule of work related expenses (SWE).
  • family tax benefit (FTB) claim status information has been removed because FTB claims are no longer administrated by the Tax Office.

Changes to the way you claim the family tax benefit (FTB)

The 2008 Federal Budget removed the option of claiming family tax benefit (FTB) payments through the tax system.

From 1 July 2009, the Tax Office will not accept any FTB claims, including current and prior year claims.

You will need to apply to the Family Assistance Office (FAO) to claim FTB for the year 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009 and future years.

For advice on claiming FTB, contact the FAO by any of the following means:

  • Visit their website at www.familyassist.gov.au
  • Phone the FAO on 13 61 50 between 8.00am and 8.00pm (local time), Monday to Friday.
  • Visit your nearest FAO. Offices are located in Medicare Australia offices and Centrelink customer service centres.
  • If you do not speak English well, phone 13 12 02.
  • If you have a hearing or speech impediment, use the teletypewriter (TTY) service 1800 810 586 (this service is only available via a teletypewriter).

Changes to the verification process

Before you can pre-fill or lodge your e-tax return online, you are required to verify your identity using the details shown on a previous notice of assessment. If you do not have a notice of assessment because you misplaced it, or you have never lodged a tax return, baby bonus claim or refund of franking credits application, you may be able to use 'shared secret' (unique) information instead to verify your identity. To find out what information is considered 'shared secret', refer to Eligibility requirements.

If you have already downloaded the software, you can follow the on-screen prompts or read the information contained in the help file.

Recent legislative changes

A number of legislative changes that may affect you have also been included in e-tax. For details of these changes, go to What’s new for 2009?
