Proof of identity - for individuals and businesses resident outside Australia

Introduction

Before you will be issued an Australian tax file number (TFN) or Australian business number (ABN), the Registrar must be satisfied that your identity has been established.

If you have previously applied for a TFN, you may not be required to provide further proof of your identity.

If we have asked you for proof of your identity before, and can confirm from our records that you have provided satisfactory documents as per current requirements, we will not ask you for anything further to identify yourself.

However, you are required to provide evidence of your identity if you:

• do not have a TFN
• have not applied for a TFN, and
• have not previously provided us with identification documents.
