As a result of a High Court decision on 11 November 2010, job seekers receiving Newstart Allowance or Youth Allowance could claim deductions for expenses they incurred in seeking paid work.

The law has been changed to stop deductions being claimed against all government assistance payments from 1 July 2011. This includes claims for job search expenses by job seekers receiving Newstart Allowance or Youth Allowance.

Claims for 2012 and later income years

You cannot claim a deduction for job search expenses that only relate to the receipt of Newstart Allowance or Youth Allowance.
