What is a tax file number (TFN)?

A TFN is a unique number we issue to individuals in Australia. It is an important part of your tax and superannuation records as well as your identity, so keep it secure.

We only issue one TFN to you during your lifetime. Once you have received your TFN you do not need to apply for a new one, even if you change your name, change your residency status or visit Australia again at a later time.

You may need a TFN when you:

  • work in Australia
  • open a bank or credit union account
  • apply to government agencies to claim benefits
  • seek financial help to go to university
  • lodge a tax return.

If you don't have a TFN you may have more tax withheld from your pay than necessary, or you may not be able to receive the government benefits you're entitled to.
