Zone or overseas forces tax offset calculator

Increase text size Decrease text size

You can use this calculator to work out your eligibility for the zone or overseas forces tax offset and calculate the tax offset that you can claim for the 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 income years. However, you cannot use this calculator in situations that involve family tax benefit Part B and shared-care.

You may be able to claim the tax offset if you have:

  • lived or worked in a remote or isolated area of Australia, not including an offshore oil or gas rig (a remote area), or
  • served overseas as a member of the Australian Defence Force (declared non-warlike service) or you were a prescribed person with a United Nations armed force and the income relating to that service is not specifically exempt from tax.

If you have a dependent spouse born on or after 1 July 1971

If your spouse was born on or after 1 July 1971, you cannot claim a dependent spouse tax offset. If your spouse is an invalid or carer spouse born on or after 1 July 1971, you may still be able to claim a dependent relative tax offset.

However, if you are not able to claim either a dependent spouse tax offset or a dependent relative tax offset (for your spouse), you may still be able to claim for your dependent spouse as part of your zone or overseas forces tax offset.
