Driving between home and work and between workplaces

Most people can't claim the cost of driving between their home and their workplace, as this travel is private. However, people doing itinerant work or who need to carry bulky tools or equipment that is used for work and can't be left at the workplace can claim for driving between work and home.

What you can claim

You can claim the cost of driving your car:

  • directly between two separate workplaces
  • from your normal workplace to an alternative workplace while you are still on duty
  • from your home to an alternative workplace for work purposes and then to your normal workplace or directly home.
