Non-Profit News Service No. 0040 - Deductible Gift Registry - Harm Prevention Charitable Institutions
The second of the Government’s announced changes to the tax laws in response to the Report of the inquiry into the definition of charities and related organisations received Royal Assent on 30 June 2003, and relates to the creation of a new type of deductible gift recipient, Harm Prevention Charities.
From 1 July 2003, the Commonwealth Department of Family & Community Services will maintain a register for charitable institutions whose principal activity is to promote the prevention or the control of behaviour that is harmful or abusive to human beings.
Charities can apply for entry to a tax deductible gift register – the Register of Harm Prevention Charitable Institutions – to assist them in obtaining financial support from the community for their activities. Entry on the Register assists charities to attract public support by making donations and gifts to those charities tax deductible.
