A new deductible gift recipient (DGR) category for private ancillary funds became effective from 1 October 2009. Existing prescribed private funds became private ancillary funds on this date.

A prescribed private fund (PPF) is a trust to which businesses, families and individuals can make tax-deductible donations. PPFs can only distribute to DGRs that have been either endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office or are listed by name in the income tax law.

This document provides a summary of the donations received and distributions made by PPFs including details of the categories of the DGRs.

Notes to the table

The information in this table will change slightly over time as outstanding returns are keyed in or other information comes to attention.

The total number of PPFs approved will not necessarily tally with those listed in regulations as regulations will not necessarily be completed until some time after the approval date (that is, the date the Minister signs the approval).

PPFs were not required to complete an information return for the 2001 financial year and were not expected to make any distributions. The 2001 information was provided in the 2002 information return.

Due to a significantly large donation in the 2008 financial year, donations to PPFs increased. If this one-off donation was not taken into account, there would have been a decrease in value of donations.

Notes to the tables

The symbol 'na' in these tables means not available.

The information in these tables will change slightly over time as outstanding returns are keyed in or other information comes to attention.

For the 2008 financial year, the cultural organisations category distributions decreased by 75.5% which is mainly attributable to there being a significant one-off distribution during the 2007 financial year.

Distributions to ancillary funds were not identifiable prior to November 2009. Distributions to these entities are not allowed and should lessen from the 2010 financial year onwards.

For the years prior to the 2007 financial year, data for the four categories of 'specific listed DGRs', 'ancillary fund DGRs', 'not a DGR', and 'not a DGR but a TCC' was combined in 'other'. For the 2007 financial year and onwards, data has been split into the four respective categories.
