At the ATO, we work for all Australians, everyday, so we're always looking for new, better and more diversified ways of responding to the communication needs of the people we work for. We use social media to share the latest information on tax changes, initiatives, products and services.
What you can expect from us
Tax is something that impacts all Australians and as such we welcome all questions and commentary, including constructive feedback. We expect users of this page will post comments that are both relevant and respectful to the community as a whole.
We update and monitor our social media pages during office hours, 8.30am - 5.00pm (AEST), from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). We read all comments and messages and make sure any emerging themes or helpful suggestions are passed on to the right people.
All information provided on our Twitter, Facebook and YouTube pages is of a general nature and is subject to change over time. Although the information we post is current and accurate at the time, we recommend you always check its currency and relevance to you.
Twitter
We will post 1-5 messages a day about a range of tax-related topics of interest to individual taxpayers, businesses, tax professionals and non-profit organisations including:
- alerts about new content on our other digital channels such as news, publications, publicity campaigns and Commissioner's speeches
- media releases
- information about our latest initiatives.
Where possible we will respond to questions or comments, however due to privacy and secrecy laws we cannot respond to questions about individual circumstances.
Facebook
We will keep our page up to date letting you know what's new and important about your tax, super and career opportunities.

'Like' our Facebook page to see our posts in your news feeds and share them with friends.
We do not collect individual personal data using Facebook. We are not able to see the profile of anyone who likes our page, only name and profile photo, nor do we have access to your news feed with information about your activities. YouTube
We regularly upload videos to promote, inform and educate you about our products and services, including:
- how to guides
- demonstrations
- taxpayer alerts
- events coverage
- promotional campaigns.

Subscribe to our channel to receive alerts when a new video is uploaded.
Subscriber requests are accepted on the condition that users comply with our terms of use.
Terms of use
By using or accessing our social media pages, you agree to comply with the terms and conditions of the website and our individual page. Postings by users do not necessarily reflect the opinions or policy of the ATO.
The ATO reserves the right to remove any comments that don't adhere to the rules outlined below and to block anyone who is seen to be breaching them repeatedly. We will not respond to any comments which breach the terms below.
The following types of comments will not be tolerated and will be removed immediately:
- comments that reveal the personal information of individual taxpayers
- comments that do not relate to our business operations
- abusive, harassing, stalking, threatening or attacking others
- defamatory, offensive, obscene, vulgar or depicting violence
- language that is hateful, targets race/ethnicity, religion, gender, nationality or political beliefs
- fraudulent, deceptive, misleading or unlawful
- trolling or deliberately disrupting discussion
- violations of any intellectual property rights
- spamming
- commercial solicitation or solicitation of donations
- link baiting (embedding a link in your post to draw traffic to your own site).
Remember, any posts you make on our Twitter, Facebook and YouTube pages are publicly viewable and searchable. Be aware that what you post may remain online indefinitely and can be found through search engines and online archives.

Questions and comments
We are committed to maintaining taxpayer's privacy and ask that you respect the privacy of others when posting comments to our channels. Comments which do not meet our terms of use, including sexist, racist, profane and defamatory comments will be immediately deleted from our channel and we reserve the right to block repeat offenders.
The comments made by a user of our social media profiles do not imply endorsement from the ATO.
If your questions or comments adhere to these rules and we can add value by contributing to the conversation, we will generally respond to you within 48 hours. Sometimes, we may need to do further investigation before we can get back to you, which might require a longer timeframe. We'll still respond within the 48 hour timeframe to let you know if this is the case.
We cannot respond to questions or comments about individual circumstances due to privacy and secrecy laws.

Protect yourself online
To protect your privacy and the privacy of others, never publish personal information such as your date of birth, tax file number (TFN), bank account details or personal contact details such as your home address. Remember to customise your security settings to ensure your profile is only accessible to those you trust.

We never ask you to pay us money in order to receive your refund nor will we ask for confidential details, like your TFN, via social media sites or emails. Do not respond to any such requests. Report them to us at reportemailfraud@ato.gov.au.
