There are two types of digital certificate; primary and secondary. Choosing the right type of certificate for people in your organisation is important because it determines how secure your information will be.
Secondary certificates
Enable access to your organisation’s account and contact details in our online services.
Can offer full access or can be restricted to particular functions or information.
Can be delegated duties by primary certificate holders including:
granting new secondary certificate holders access to the portals
restricting other secondary certificate holders access to the portals.
Suitable for most people in your organisation.
Primary certificates
Secondary certificate access + the ability to:
complete and submit registrations for new secondary digital certificates
complete and submit requests for replacement digital certificates
grant new secondary certificate holders access to the portals
restrict secondary certificate holders to specific portal functions (for example, lodging and preparing activity statements)
Primary digital certificate holders have unrestricted access to your organisation’s information in our online services.
They also have the ability to register others for secondary certificates.
Keeping the number of people who can register others for certificates to a minimum gives you greater control over the security of your information.
Register
If no-one in your organisation has a digital certificate, you will need to decide who is going to be your primary digital certificate holder. Once they have been successfully registered for a primary digital certificate and have installed it, they can register others in your organisation for secondary certificates.
If your organisation already has a primary digital certificate holder, they will advise you about which type of certificate is appropriate for you. It’s their responsibility to authorise your registration by completing and submitting it to us on your behalf.
Tax practices
If the new digital certificate holder requires access to the Tax Agent Portal (TAP), you should quote your tax agent number (TAN) on the registration form. However, please be aware there are restrictions on who can have access to the TAP because of the sensitive nature of the information in it.
You should only quote your TAN on digital certificate registration forms for the following types of people:
a. registered tax agents
b. registered nominees of a tax agent
c. employees of a registered tax agent, or
d. members of a partnership (if the registered tax agent is a partnership)
e. not contractors or sub-agents of any person/entity of the type listed in conditions (a) – (d).
Secondary digital certificate
You must be a primary digital certificate holder for your organisation (ABN), and have installed that certificate to register others for a secondary digital certificate.
If you are unable to use the online form, you can download one and mail or fax it to us. Alternatively, if you are a tax agent or their staff and cannot use the online system, please download the following form.
Online requests are given priority so we recommend you only download a form if the online system is unavailable.
