One week to lodge your income tax return

Media release 2008/52

The Tax Office today reminded people who prepare their own tax return that the Friday 31 October deadline is only one week away.

Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo advised anyone concerned about meeting the deadline to contact the Tax Office as soon as possible to discuss their situation.

“It’s important you lodge your return before the 31 October deadline to avoid penalties for late lodgment,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.

“If you think you will have difficulty meeting this deadline you need to call 13 28 61 to discuss your options.

“e-tax is an easy way for people to complete and lodge their return at any time of the day or night, and can save you time by downloading information like bank interest, payment summaries and government payments directly into your return.”

e-tax is available to download from the Tax Office website www.ato.gov.au

“If you are using a tax agent for the first time or a different one from last year, you need to contact them before Friday 31 October,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.

“Remember only registered tax agents can charge a fee to prepare and lodge a tax return.”

You can check if your tax agent is registered by visiting the Tax Agent’s Board website www.tabd.gov.au or by phoning 1300 362 829.

It is important to check your return carefully before lodging, including any information you’ve downloaded into your return through e-tax, to ensure you’ve included all income and claimed all deductions and rebates you’re entitled to.
