TaxPack 2009

What is TaxPack?

TaxPack is a print publication designed to help you to complete your individual income tax return. TaxPack is divided into two parts:

To find out your options on completing and lodging your tax return read How do I lodge my tax return?

For information about whether you need to lodge a tax return, read:

TaxPack 2009 and TaxPack 2009 supplement are available:

  • at most newsagents from 1 July to 31 October 2009
  • at our shopfronts, or
  • by downloading below or ordering online.

e-tax 2009 CD project

For Tax Time 2009, deliveries of TaxPack and TaxPack supplement packages to Northern Territory, South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania will be replaced with an e-tax 2009 CD mail pack. The CD will contain the e-tax 2009 software which can be easily installed onto a personal computer to prepare your tax return and then lodge online.

E-tax from the Tax Office is the free tax return preparation software that ensures most refunds are issued in 14 days. By using encryption technology, e-tax ensures your details are secure during transmission over the internet. e-tax asks you simple questions to help you work through the answers to complete your tax return, and has calculators to help you get it right.

E-tax gives you access to your individual information using the pre-filling service. You can download details of your income including salary and wages, government payments, interest and dividends and have e-tax pre-fill that information straight into your return. Pre-filling Information will be progressively available from July with most information available by mid August. You can also register for the alerts service in e-tax and we will let you know when more of your information becomes available.

For more information or assistance with e-tax or the pre-filing service, go to E-tax essentials

TaxPack information

While TaxPack is designed to help individuals complete their income tax returns, many people also use it as a basic reference to the Australian tax system. The information in TaxPack has been rewritten into a series of web pages and published across this site.

You can search or browse the site to find general information about:

  • income you must declare
  • deductions and tax offsets you are entitled to claim, and
  • tax rates and calculations.

If you would prefer to download TaxPack in Portable Document Format (PDF), refer to the list of download files.

All the publications and rulings referred to in TaxPack are listed in TaxPack and e-tax publications and rulings.

Tax rates and calculations

If you wish to calculate the amount of your refund or debt, you can use the following tools:

This tool will help you to calculate the tax you owe on your taxable income. It will not calculate any:

    • Medicare levy
    • Medicare levy surcharge
    • Higher education contribution scheme (HECS), or
    • Student financial supplement scheme (SFSS) liabilities you may have.

The calculator caters for income years ended 30 June 2005, 30 June 2006 and 30 June 2007.

You can use this calculator for an estimate of your tax refund or debt for income years ended 30 June 2005, 30 June 2006 and 30 June 2007.

It will estimate your tax payable and will also calculate

    • Medicare levy
    • Medicare levy surcharge
    • Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) debt
    • Student Financial Supplement Scheme (SFSS) debt, and
    • any tax offsets that may apply.

It will take these, along with other tax credits, into account in estimating your tax refund or debt.

Contact us

You can phone the Tax Office

You can phone the Tax Office if you need assistance with a question in TaxPack, including the supplement, or another matter concerning your tax affairs. If you decide to phone us, please have your TaxPack or supplement handy. See the Tax Office contacts list for telephone contact numbers.

You can ask for a taxation ruling

If you have a complex enquiry about your tax affairs, you may want to ask for a private ruling.

To do this, complete an application for a private ruling for individuals (NAT 13742).

A private ruling relates only to your particular situation. Your tax return should reflect what the private ruling says. You may need to change your tax return if you lodge it before you receive your private ruling.

The Tax Office publishes all private rulings on its internet site. What we publish will not contain anything which could identify you. For more information, see How to apply for a private ruling.

You can ask for a review of your private ruling if you disagree with it even if you have not yet received your assessment. You can find out more about objection procedures from the Tax Office branch that made your ruling.

Oral rulings

The Tax Office provides oral rulings on non-complex individual non-business enquiries.

You can apply for an oral ruling by phone. To do so you will need to confirm your identity. Your tax file number and most recent notice of assessment will usually be sufficient proof of identity.

We will confirm your eligibility for an oral ruling by asking you a series of questions to confirm that your enquiry is eligible to be ruled on.

To get further information on oral rulings, or to apply for a ruling, phone us on 13 28 61.
