Australian business number (ABN) objections

Recent amendments to the A New Tax System (Australian Business Number) Act 1999 allow you to lodge an objection on behalf of your clients to certain decisions made by the Registrar of the Australian Business Register (ABR).

You can lodge an objection if the Registrar:

  • refuses to give your client an ABN
  • refuses to cancel your client’s ABN
  • refuses to suppress your client’s ABN details
  • cancels your client’s ABN.

You can also lodge an objection to the:

  • date of effect of your client’s ABN
  • date of effect of the cancellation of your client’s ABN.

What you need to do

You must lodge an objection in writing within 60 days from the date your client is given notice by the ABR.

We recommend that you use the Objection form (tax professionals).

If you are lodging an objection to a refusal to give your client an ABN, include the refusal identifier. This is labelled as ‘Your reference’ in the notice sent to your client.

You can lodge the objection form:

  • online through the Tax Agent Portal
  • by fax on 1300 139 035
  • by mail to:
