Information about business income tax, fringe benefits tax (FBT), fuel tax credits (FTC), goods and services tax (GST), pay as you go (PAYG) and activity statements, including lodgment and payment, accounts and business registration (including Australian business number and tax file number), and dividend and royalty withholding tax.

Personal tax enquiries – 13 28 61

Enquiries about retirement, baby bonus, tax file number, pay as you go (PAYG) – including activity statements, Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP), Student Financial Supplement Scheme, account balance or replacement cheque, preparation of an online tax return, general income tax, lodgment and notices of assessment.

Superannuation enquiries – 13 10 20

Enquiries about super co-contributions, superannuation contributions surcharge, superannuation guarantee – including non payment by an employer, lost superannuation, self managed superannuation funds, simpler super and general superannuation enquiries.

An operator assisted ordering service is available – 8.00am to 6.00pm weekdays, closed on weekends and public holidays. An automated self help publications ordering service is also available on this number 24 hours a day, seven days per week.

Automated self help publications ordering service

The automated self help publications ordering service is also available 24 hours per day seven days per week on the following numbers.

ATO Personal Self Help – 13 28 65, ATO Business Self Help – 13 72 26.

The automated self-help ordering service is a speech recognition system that requires the caller to use their own speaking voice to place the order. The service is suitable for callers who know the full title of the publication they wish to order and have no other questions. There is no need to press any buttons. Callers just need to follow the prompts as if they are talking to a real person. The service does not accept NAT numbers.

Business clients will be required to provide their ABN to use this service.

International callers can contact the Tax Office by phoning +61 2 6216 1111 between the hours of 8.00am to 5.00pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time or daylight-saving time) and ask for your call to be transferred to the appropriate area within the Tax Office. Alternatively, you can fax us on +61 2 6216 2830. Other telephone contact numbers may not work from some countries.

Aboriginal and Islander Centre

The centre specialises in helping Indigenous clients and can assist with a wide range of tax matters.

ATO Business self help

Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week - automated self-help service.

Functions include verifying an Australian business number (ABN), lodgment of nil activity statements, payment arrangements, checking on the progress of income tax refunds, and ordering personalised payment slips.

An automated publications ordering service is also available. This is a speech recognition service that requires the caller to use their own speaking voice to place the order. To use the service the caller must know the name of the publication that they want to order and will be required to quote an ABN.

Enquiries from tax practitioners about accounts, lodgment, registration, tax law/advice on simple matters, practice management, and the Relationship Manager program – including complaints and other difficulties.

The TAXAGENT Services guide provides tax practitioners with Fast Key Codes, which allow practitioners to key ahead to the option of their choice without having to listen to the entire menu.

When calling about client's details, tax agents will be asked to follow Proof of identity procedures.

  • If you are deaf, or have a hearing or speech impairment, you can contact us through the National Relay Service
