The Deemed Distance Calculator
This Deemed Distance Calculator is an easy to use tool which calculates
the distances for the purpose of preparing claims for the energy grants
credits scheme.
You could use alternative methods to this calculator for distance calculation,
such as road signage or touring maps.

What is deeming?
Deeming allows you to calculate eligible kilometres for cross metropolitan
boundary trips by using the distance from the relevant metropolitan
area post office to the nearest point outside the metropolitan area
from which the trip is started or finished. This means you would not
have to keep track of the actual eligible kilometres travelled. However,
at the end of a grant period if the total deemed kilometres calculated
exceeds the total actual kilometres travelled, then eligible kilometres
will be restricted to the actual kilometres travelled. Both the initial
and return trips can be included in the calculation.
Please see the list of relevant metropolitan areas below.

When can the deeming method be used?
trip is considered eligible if the vehicle has
- a GVM of 4.5 and less than 20 tonnes, that is a vehicle for transporting goods
and passengers, and
travel is:
- Between different defined metropolitan areas, or
- Between a point outside a defined metropolitan area and a point
inside a defined metropolitan area (or vice versa)
For trips that are solely outside the defined metropolitan areas the
actual kilometres method must be used.
Eligible kilometres
Where these vehicles cross metropolitan boundaries, eligible kilometres can be calculated by either:
- (a) keeping records of the actual eligible kilometres travelled; or
- (b) using the deeming method
|
Vehicle exceptions
|
Deeming cannot be used by:
- Vehicles with a GVM of 20 tonnes or more, and
- the following vehicles with a GVM between 4.5 tonnes and less
than 20 tonnes:
(a) emergency service vehicles
(b) buses using alternative fuels
(c) buses undertaking scheduled routes crossing metropolitan
boundaries.
(d) eligible vehicles used by a primary production business
or used to transport goods or passengers solely on behalf
of a primary production business.
These vehicles must use the actual method, as their eligible travel
is not affected by metropolitan boundaries. |
