Help with using the Calculator

Help is available on the following topics

To return to the calculator page that you were looking at before selecting this Help page use the Browser's back button (you may need to do this a few times if you use the above links to move around this page).

How to use the calculator

Step 1

Choose your journey type from the following:

One of these choices will be shown as selected while the others will be shown as unselected .

To change the journey type, simply click on the unselected button to the left of the journey type required.

Then click on Next to go to the next step.

If your journey type is "From a Regional location to a Metropolitan area" then

Step 2

You will need to define the location for the start of your journey. The list of Regional locations is quite long so we need you to select the State or Territory in which the Regional location nearest to where your journey starts is located.

Click and hold down the mouse on the State/Territory list, move the mouse down until the correct item is highlighted (selected) and then release the mouse. While you hold down the mouse the entire list is exposed, when you release the mouse only the selected item is shown.

Note that the State/Territory list does not contain the ACT or Tasmania - as there are no Regional locations for the ACT or Tasmania in the Deemed Distance calculator database.

For this example, select Victoria and then click on "next" to select your location in that State/Territory.

Step 3

Now select the Regional location nearest to the start of your journey from the "Regional locations in VIC" list.

In recent browsers you may be able to select the list using Tab key on your keyboard and then either use the down arrow key or type the first letter of the Regional location. This is a handy way to make a selection from a long list.

For this example, select CASTLEMAINE and then click on "next" to select the end of your journey.

Step 4

Now select the Metropolitan area for the end of your journey from the "Metropolitan areas" list.

For this example, select MELBOURNE and then click on "next" to get the deemed distance for your journey.

Tick

The calculator now displays the message "The deemed distance from CASTLEMAINE in VIC to MELBOURNE in VIC is 118 kilometres."

From here you can go back and start another calculation by clicking the Start again link. If you need more information on the calculator and the deemed distance method just click on the Back to the Introduction link.

If your journey type is "From a Metropolitan area to a Regional location" then

Step 2

Now select the Metropolitan area for the start of your journey from the "Metropolitan areas" list.

For this example, select SYDNEY and then click on "next" to select the Regional location for the end of your journey.

Step 3

You will need to define the location for the end of your journey. The list of Regional locations is quite long so we need you select the State or Territory in which the Regional location nearest to where your journey ends is located.

For this example, select Queensland and then click on "next" to select your location in that State/Territory.

Step 4

Now select the Regional location for the end of your journey from the "Regional locations in QLD" list.

In recent browsers you may be able to select the list using Tab key on your keyboard and then either use the down arrow key or type the first letter of the Regional location. This is a handy way to make a selection from a long list.

For this example, select MOUNT ISA and then click on "next" to get the deemed distance for your journey.

Tick

The calculator now displays the message "The deemed distance from SYDNEY in NSW to MOUNT ISA in QLD is 2379 kilometres."

From here you can go back and start another calculation by clicking the Start again link. If you need more information on the calculator and the deemed distance method just click on the Back to the Introduction link.

If your journey type is "From a Metropolitan area to another Metropolitan area" then

Step 2

Now select the Metropolitan area for the start of your journey from the "Metropolitan areas" list.

For this example, select SYDNEY and then click on "next" to select the Metropolitan area for the end of your journey.

Step 3

Now select the Metropolitan area for the end of your journey from the "Eligible Metropolitan areas" list.

Note that NEWCASTLE, SYDNEY, and WOLLONGONG are not included in the list as journeys within this group of Metropolitan areas are not valid journeys for the Deemed Distance method. See the information on Metropolitan areas for more detail.

For this example, select MELBOURNE and then click on "next" to get the deemed distance for your journey.

Tick

The calculator now displays the message "The deemed distance from SYDNEY in NSW to MELBOURNE in VIC is 858 kilometres."

From here you can go back and start another calculation by clicking the Start again link. If you need more information on the calculator and the deemed distance method just click on the Back to the Introduction link.
