SuperSeeker

SuperSeeker is a secure online tool that helps you keep track of your super.

You can use SuperSeeker to:

  • check your current super accounts that money has been paid into in the last two financial years
  • find lost super - there are billions in lost super, see if some of it is yours
  • find ATO-held super - if the government, your super fund or your employer can't find an account to transfer your super to, we hold it on your behalf
  • transfer your super to the super account you want.

To access these services, the first thing you need to do is register online with us. This is an important security measure to protect the personal information displayed. It also helps to ensure that any transactions are made by you. Registering online will give you access to your super information 24/7.

You can find out if you have any lost or ATO-held super by doing a quick search. You will need to provide your name, date of birth and tax file number.

Register and create a secure online password

Once you create a secure login you can use it to access SuperSeeker anytime.

We need information from some personal documents to know who you are. You need two of the documents shown in table 1 - your notice of assessment (NOA) from us is a good place to start. Check the details that appear on your NOA and make sure you use the same details when creating your secure login. For example, if you have changed your name since your last NOA was issued, you need to use your old name for us to confirm your identity.

You will be asked for different details, depending on which two documents you use.

Who can use SuperSeeker?

SuperSeeker is designed for you to find information about your own super.

Where will SuperSeeker search?

SuperSeeker will search our database of accounts reported to us by funds and our own records of super money we are holding for you.

What super money do we hold?

We hold super money for you if it has been paid to us by a fund, employer or the government as required by law. If we can't find an account to transfer the money to, we will hold it for you.

How do you create a secure login?

What if there is a match?

If SuperSeeker finds more than one super account, you could consider combining your accounts into one fund or contacting the super funds for more information about them. Consolidating your accounts can reduce your fees and other costs.

If SuperSeeker finds we are holding funds in your name, you can nominate it to go to a super fund or retirement savings account. In some circumstances, you may be able to withdraw it. To claim the money, follow the links to the transfer and withdrawal forms in SuperSeeker. You can also phone 13 10 20 for information about these accounts.

If SuperSeeker finds an account on the Lost Members Register (LMR), contact the fund to update your personal details or enquire about the account. You don't have to transfer your lost super to another account.

What should you consider before transferring super?

Putting all your super into one account means you will only pay one set of account fees and charges. It also makes it easier to keep track of your super.

However, there are some important factors to consider before transferring your super:

  • Differences in the fees can make a big difference to what you will have to retire on - for example, a 1% increase in fees can significantly reduce your final benefit.
  • The fund you want to leave could add administrative fees, and exit or withdrawal fees.
  • The fund you want to transfer to may charge entry or deposit fees.
  • The fund you want to leave may insure you against death, illness or an accident which leaves you unable to return to work and if you leave this fund, you may lose these insurance entitlements - check if the other fund offers comparable cover.
  • The fund you want to transfer to may not accept transfers of ATO-held or super fund-held money - check before starting your transfer.

If you are unsure what to do, you should seek independent financial advice or contact your super fund.

There are no fees or charges for transferring ATO-held super money into a super fund account.

Why doesn't your account show a balance?

SuperSeeker will show your information that is reported to us by your super fund. Sometimes an account balance is not reported.

Why isn't your balance the same as your last statement?

Your account balance is not reported in real time. Check the report date next to the balance, your fund may have issued a member statement after they reported to us.

Why can't you see your other super accounts?

If you recently opened an account or your account has not yet received a contribution, the account would not have been reported to us by the super fund. Accounts are reported to us annually based on holdings at 30 June. At this stage, only accounts that have received contributions are reported.

What will your account balance show if you are a member of a defined benefit super scheme?

If you are a member of a defined benefit super scheme, your account balance reported to us may vary from scheme to scheme. Refer to your member statement for details.

For Commonwealth public service defined benefit schemes - including CSS and PSS - your account balance will show the preserved benefit (that is, accumulated contributions and earnings) as at 30 June.

What if you don't know your TFN?

You can find your TFN on:

  • your income tax notice of assessment
  • correspondence we have sent to you
  • your payment summary - for example, from your employer.

If you have a tax agent, you can ask them for your TFN.

If you still can't find your TFN, you can get it from us:

  • phone 13 28 61 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday
  • visit an ATO shopfront (phone 13 28 61 to make an appointment).

If you do not want to use SuperSeeker online or our self-help phone service, you can phone us and ask us to do a search for you.
