Finding your lost super

Lost members register (LMR)

We keep a list of names of people who have been reported by their funds as lost. This list is called the LMR.

The LMR includes details of lost members for accounts held by:

  • super funds
  • approved deposit funds
  • eligible rollover funds
  • retirement savings account providers.

If you have changed jobs, addresses or names, you may be listed on the LMR.

You may also be listed on the LMR if:

  • your fund has been unable to contact you, as they do not have your address or the mail they sent to you has been returned
  • your fund has not received contributions or a rollover for you in the past five years
  • your account was transferred to another fund as a lost member.

SuperSeeker will look for your lost super and provide you with possible matches. SuperSeeker searches the LMR and our other records to find possible matches for your lost super.

Using SuperSeeker online or by phone

SuperSeeker is a free service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You can access SuperSeeker:

  • online using the SuperSeeker tool
  • by phoning 13 28 65 and following the prompts.

To use SuperSeeker online, you will need to provide your:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • tax file number (TFN).

To use SuperSeeker by phone you will need to provide your:

  • date of birth
  • TFN.

If SuperSeeker finds a possible match, it will give you the name and contact details of the fund that may have your lost super. We will also provide details of this account, including the account number and your address as provided by the fund. This will assist you when making contact with your fund.

If SuperSeeker finds a match between the details you have provided and an account held by us, you will be asked to contact us directly.

Where an account is found on the LMR, you may wish to consider:

  • consolidating your super accounts, which may reduce your fees and costs
  • contacting the fund to update your personal details or enquire about your lost account
  • withdrawing your benefit, if your account balance is less than $200 and certain criteria are met.

If you wish to transfer the whole balance of your lost super account to another fund, SuperSeeker online can assist by pre-filling a transfer form for you which you can print and send to your fund. You can also use the Request to transfer whole balance of superannuation benefits between funds form (NAT 71223, PDF, 103KB).

Search for lost super by paper

You can also request a search for lost super by completing a Searching for lost super form (NAT 2476) and sending it to the Tax Office.

You can download the Searching for lost super form (NAT 2476, PDF, 140KB) or request copies by phoning our publication ordering service on 1300 720 092.

Super accounts with less than $200

If the balance of your lost super account is less than $200, you may be able to take it out tax-free. Talk to your super fund for more information.

Provide your TFN

If you give your fund your TFN, it is much easier to keep track of your super.

You can check whether your fund has your TFN by looking at your member statement. If your TFN is not listed on your statement, contact your fund.

Since 1 July 2007, if your fund does not have your TFN:

  • your fund has to pay extra income tax on certain contributions
  • your fund may not be able to accept certain other contributions
  • you may miss out on super co-contributions.
