Unclaimed superannuation - provider's frequently asked questions

Introduction

From 31 December 2012, super providers must report and pay the following lost accounts as unclaimed super:

  • lost accounts with balances of less than $2,000 (small lost member accounts)
  • lost accounts which have been inactive for a period of 12 months and have insufficient records to ever identify the owner of the account (insoluble lost member accounts).

This information answers questions super providers frequently ask about unclaimed super.

There are five categories of unclaimed super - that is, unclaimed super for a:

  • member 65 years old or older
  • non-member spouse
  • deceased member
  • former temporary resident
  • member with a small or insoluble lost member account.
